Sváfa and Sigrún

-Norse reincarnation-
King Hjörvarðr’s son was a silent child to whom no name could be given until he had grown up and saw nine Valkyries riding by. Sváfa, the most beautiful amongst them, descended to him and called him Helgi. When she asked him what he wished for as a naming-gift, Helgi answered he wanted nothing if he could not have Sváfa herself.

Helgi fought and won many battles, with Sváfa alongside him, shielding him from danger. But once they had married, Sváfa’s father kept her with him while Helgi was away doing battle.

One day, a troll-woman cursed Helgi and he finally met defeat during a holmgang. Dying, he sent for Sváfa so that they might meet one last time before he passed. But Helgi Hjörvarðsson would not drink Heiðrún’s mead yet, for he would be reborn as Helgi Hundingsbane. Revived, he too would in turn search the sky to find a flight of Valkyries storming the heavens, led by Sigrún : Sváfa reborn.

Again, the pair fell in love, though Sigrún warned Helgi that she was promised to the son of king Granmarr. Undeterred, Helgi set out to cut down all who would stand between him and Sigrún. Only Sigrún's brother Dagr was spared on condition that he swore fealty to Hundingsbane.

And so the Norns reward leniency with death, for Dagr would ultimately avenge his slain brothers by running Helgi through with a spear given to him by the Allfather. Helgi Hundingsbane’s body was laid in a barrow, but returned from Valhalla so that he may spend one more night with his Sigrún, who would die from sorrow.

Their threads though, were not cut yet…
The cycle starts anew.
